Mattress Protection

Mattress Protection is a big concern to parents with kids whose kids are transitioning out of diapers. Sheets are easy to wash, but mattresses are not! There are a variety of mattress protectors on the market. They vary in price and effectiveness:

Basic mattress protectors are simply sheets of rubber or other non-porous material placed between the sheet and mattress. They are relatively affordable and offer some protection against small leaks in localized areas. The tend not to breath and can cause damp sheets due to sweat accumulation in hot weather.  If there is more fluid than the sheet can absorb, or if the pad isn’t placed properly, moisture can wick past the edges of the protector and get the mattress wet anyway.

Higher priced mattress protectors look like mattress pads. They fit like a fitted bottom sheet and cover the whole bed.  Although they offer better protection than basic pads, the still don’t breath and can get moist & sticky in hot weather.
