Softness from Half a World Away

Despite the best efforts of domestic cotton producers, the secret has gotten out about Egyptian cotton: It’s just so much softer. One wouldn’t think that a crop’s location would make much of a discernible difference, but try telling that to a French vintner. The finest wines are named for their region of production. Along those same lines, the world’s softest cotton is cultivated in the fertile Nile River valley.

At first feel, Egyptian cotton has a surprisingly rough texture. After a trip or two through the laundry, however, a set of king Egyptian cotton sheets attains a softness normally reserved for cloud-dwelling angels. Cotton harvested in Egypt contains a long fiber, which is less scratchy and irritating than shorter-fiber domestic fabrics. If you’re looking for some new bedding, make sure to put the material to the test.

king sized bedWhen it comes to picking the right bed, you need to consider what bed best suits both your comfort needs and your budgetary needs. To that end, your bed needs to be the largest bed you can still comfortably afford. If you live alone, this might well be a twin or full. But if you share the bed with someone else, it’s more than likely that you’re going to need a King or Queen.

You also have to consider, however, that the initial cost of the bed won’t be all your bedding expenditures. You’ll also have to pick sheets and bedding that match the size of that bed. So if you have a King bed, for example, you’re going to need King sheet sets. Also, it’s best to have multiple sets on hand. This way, while you’re cleaning and drying one set, you’ll always have another at the ready.
